PHEW – That Was Close!

by Bryn Youngblut on February 24, 2009

I was just screwing around on my blog server and managed to delete my database! I felt like a complete idiot than I remembered the email I get every day with my database backup.

I uploaded the file and boom my blog was back in seconds. I must say this Plugin saved my ass a lot of work.

If you don’t already have it install the WP Database Plugin now!

I know the feeling, I just went through a screw up just the other day, I did an fresh install of WP instead of an upgrade and lost everything, but had the back up thankfully.

I changed it from daily to weekly, perhaps I should change it back lol.

Dennis: Definitely have nightly backups instead of weekly. I also suggest doing your own backups and not only depending on the backups your own host makes (don’t assume they make any unless they state otherwise or you’re paying for the service).

I have a small script I wrote that you can put on a cronjob to do regular updates:

It’s good for accidental deletions but not for hardware failure. Ideally you wanna have it FTP/email you the backups.

Yet another good reason to use WordPress, the plugins are fantastic.I take a backup of my blog once per week just to be sure.
