Should I get the new iPhone?

by Bryn Youngblut on July 11, 2008

I’ve been thinking about it and since it was just released here in Canada today I am considering getting one. I’m just not sure yet if I want to up my current cell phone bill to almost double but I would love the internet usage when I’m out, kinda like a crack berry. Anyone that has one want to give me some advice?

I say no unless you listen to a lot of mp3s when you are out and about then maybe. If you are Mac guy that feels you need to be decked out with all the latest Apple hype then yes.

My BlackBerry is fine for me.

I’m not a Mac guy at all, never owned one. Thanks for the advice.

Hey Bryn!
I am a complete and total Mac convert and even I won’t be going anywhere near the iPhone in the forseeable future and it’s only partially due to Rogers’ insane chokehold on the service end of things. I’ve got the iPod Touch and it’s a pretty decent compromise, assuming you don’t mind carrying two things (the iPod and your phone) AND assuming that you don’t mind looking for wireless hotspots/stealing wireless from those silly people who don’t have any security on their systems. That last bit isn’t too hard to do in the city, but I imagine that you might have more trouble at, say, the cottage. I guess it depends on how much you’ll depend on the internet aspect of it.

@Susan

Thanks for the comment and your advice. I think i’m gonna hold off cause I really don’t need the portable music or media it’s more of just internet and phone usage.

Yo man. First let me say I work in the computer industry. Second, let me clarify that I hate Macs. Now let me say that I love my iPhone. I’m sure it’s a preference thing for those that have Black Berries and other devices, but the iPhone is great for me as a webmaster and really helps increase my productivity. As we speak I am laying in bed posting this with my phone, then doing email and blog updates. I find all the other misc features have become more valuable to me than the mp3/movie functions. It’s great for jotting down ideas, snapping pictures, moderating blogs, email, etc. As I said before you can do that stuff with other devices so I think it all comes down to preference. Having one really does feel like owning a pocket sized computer though. Nice blog man.

I won an iPhone at Adtech NY in November 07 (last year), and since I was a Telus user (Vancouver), I decided that it was probably best I traded it in since Telus uses CDMA (iPhone is GSM).

I traded it in at the apple store and swapped it for an itouch, which is basically a hacked down version of the iPhone minus the camera and phone features. I honestly don’t use the thing at all. It is horrible to use for an mp3 player since you have to unlock it with the touch screen and use touch screen controls to adjust volume which really sucks if you are at the gym or going for a run or something.

Next, touch screen phones are a pain in the ass, end of story. I used to have a UT Starcom 6700 (now HTC), and it is damn near impossible to drive and dial because you have to be looking at your phone to make sure you are hitting the right button; there is no texture on the buttons. Ya, I know people shouldn’t drive and talk, but its inevitable sometimes.

Next, txting is a bitch because the letters on the screen are so damn small, its feasible, but it takes a hell of a lot more effort that just typing in the characters on a regular phone or a blackberry.

I now use a Blackberry 8830 World Edition and would not swap it for an iphone if you paid me.

Hope you never bought one!
