Are You Over Paying For E-mail Marketing Services?

by Bryn Youngblut on November 17, 2010

I just found out the other day that I have basically being getting ripped off by Aweber for a long time. Maybe it was my fault for not looking into the billing more but the way they outline it makes it seem like it would be accurate. This is not the case.

Did you know Aweber counts all unsubscribed users on your list as part of your list total? Let’s say you have 50,000 people who have unsubscribed, these people would cost you an extra $400 PER MONTH. You can’t even send email to these people yet they want you to pay for them, why? They say it’s because people like to have the unsubscriber data to see where people drop off the list. OK that is a fair enough reasoning, but should they really be billing you for that? If anything make a separate rate for unsubscribed users that would be a lot less.

The only way to not be billed for your unsubscribed users is to delete them from your list.

I don’t know if or what other e-mail marketing companies charge for this but I know GetResponse doesn’t.

Personally I think this is ridiculous and I am glad I switched to GetResponse.

I have heard good things about GetResponse, but I’ve always used Streamsend.

They are half the cost of Getresponse and have a great UI that makes managing lists and campaigns easy.

Check it out, I think you’ll be impressed.

Hey Bryn, did you look at MailChimp too? I’ve been using that for a while but hadn’t given GetResponse a good look over. MailChimp has a fantastic API which makes list generation and bulk mailing to narrow segments really easy (especially if you use Ruby instead of PHP).

Despite that, it isn’t perfect for everything, especially internal lists or CRM emails. Has GetResponse been good for you for that? Glad that you made the switch from Aweber though…they really haven’t been up to snuff for a while sadly.

Mailchimp is awesome, though they will not allow any kind of email marketing for affiliate offers. Besides that probably the best bet for nice looking forms and emails. They are also free up to 1000 emails and allow you to easily segment your lists and data.

GetResponse has been excellent for me for some time. Are you using the enterprise version? I recently met the guy who built GR, who left to build his own solution – http://www.expertsender.com – Anyone used it yet?
