I Failed

by Bryn Youngblut on February 17, 2010

Or did I?

At the start of the month I attempted to not have a drink of alcohol for an entire month, simply to prove to myself that I could do it if I wanted too. I’m not an alcoholic but I do enjoy having some drinks socially during hockey games and on weekends.

On February 12th I decided I had gone long enough and had my first beer for the month, I planned on just having the one, some wings and to chill out. That night went from taking it easy to an all out party. Me and a few friends went out to a crazy bar and had a great time…that’s pretty much the only details I want to share on here.

Saturday and Sunday (single girls wanting to party on Valentines) nights turned out similar. Straight up, I had an amazing weekend.

So do I think breaking my challenge to not drink for an entire month was a failure? Not really. I didn’t drink the many times that I went out with my hammered friends, it was actually hilarious to see how everyone is when you’re sober. I didn’t drink during the super bowl which is usually a shit show. I held myself back pretty easily, but realistically I know I can drink whenever I want or don’t want without any issue.

All in all I am glad I did this and even more glad I broke off early.

I knew it. 🙂 Hard to stop completely… I usually just sip on the same beer all night when I decide to slow down…

I remember the first Sat morning I woke up without any hangover after getting blitzed pretty much every Friday night for years.
I was amazed at how good I felt.

Hahah nice nice. I was a bit tired on the way to Vegas, so the poker tourney was good for me that night. The rest of the ASW days were in a drunken stupor though…it was siiiick. We definitely need to party at Ad-tech man.

I’m confused; did you actually make the month first?

good work… next time instead of trying a month, try 1 day, repeated 30 times. The “just for today” mindset makes it cake.

You didn’t fail brutha… far from it.

Look, you’re a success, that takes huge discipline right there. So you slipped up a night. You’ve made it in other things… Big Time.

Not everybody is rollin in a LEXUS at 22 years old. Congrats man. You should be proud of yourself

Not to break your balls but skipping one weekend doesn’t prove much. If you could have had the one without sliding into binge drinking all weekend, that might have meant something.

In my experience when I hear someone say “I’m not an alcoholic….etc.” it usually means that they are in denial. Be careful. Lots of people who find success, especially at a young age, live too hard and burn out after a few years.

I’ve done some pretty impressive stretches of living fast and partying hard. I love to drink and am not morally superior. But it has been about 7 months since I had a drink. Take care.

That’s good to hear but trust me if I was in denial about anything I wouldn’t be sharing it publicly. Also I don’t “binge” drink like in college, just because you have a couple drinks it doesn’t mean you have to get drunk.

Maybe I should have clarified more in the post but what might sound like a “binge” weekend was far from it, when I go out and want to pick up girls, drinking too much is the last thing I would want to do.

No worries here. I’m sure you know yourself better than I do.

If I were single and didn’t have 5 kids and a wife…I’d be drinking and chasing women myself. Have an extra one of each for me please.

It’s ok you know you can give it up and in the future you can do it again. Personally I am 1 month + on my not drinking and heading to April strong ! Although St. Pats day was hard to get through with our a drink.
